AI datasets are backward-looking by their very nature. They are built from what already exists.
Creativity moves the other way. It is forward-looking by its very nature. It exists before any dataset can capture it.
That tension sits at the center of the AI conversation, and most of it gets skipped.
Here is the part that keeps me returning. The data feeding these models was not gathered with consent. Designers, writers, photographers, musicians, illustrators. Their work was absorbed into training sets without permission and without compensation. Set the ethics aside for a moment. This is also a serious question of IP law. The legal answer is still being written, and the direction does not look favorable for how many of these models were trained.
I wish for AI to find its most valuable purpose. Collecting and organizing knowledge. Pattern recognition at scales humans cannot reach. Searching, comparing, summarizing. Tools that genuinely extend human capacity.
The trouble starts when AI shifts from collecting knowledge to manufacturing postulates. Confident statements with no foundation. Plausible-sounding claims with nothing underneath. That is not knowledge work. That is noise dressed as authority.
This is true for text and image models alike. LLMs invent sources and statistics. Image generators invent anatomy, objects, and details. Both produce convincing surfaces with nothing behind them.
Creativity is not generated by averaging the past. It is a human superpower. It looks forward, makes leaps, holds contradictions, and produces something that did not exist before. AI can support that work. It cannot replace it.
What actually fosters creativity is older than any model. Time without interruption. Friction with materials. Curiosity that has not been optimized for engagement. Exposure to fields outside your own. Conversations with people who think differently. Experimenting. Making things by hand. The patience to sit with a problem that has no answer yet.
When AI creates more space for those conditions, it earns its place. When AI replaces those conditions instead of protecting them, we trade creative capacity for output volume. The loss is hidden behind the volume.
The cases I have sat with in court keep returning the same lesson. Strong ideas lose when the evidence of their origin is weak. As AI accelerates, that risk grows. Documenting your creative process from the beginning matters more, not less.
This is the work IPR LOG was built for.
