Hello EU design
The EU has launched its “EU design” regime, ushering in a new era of design protection as of March 2025. The reform introduces the Ⓓ symbol – like ® or © – for registered designs.
Key updates include broader definitions covering animation, Graphical User Interface, and virtual environments, plus rights to stop unauthorized 3D-printing and sharing.
Simplified filing rules now allow up to 50 designs in one application.
With a unified EUIPO process, protection is more accessible than ever. A permanent “repair clause” also allows third parties to restore complex products without infringing design rights.
This harmonised, streamlined system empowers designers and businesses across Europe.
